It is starting to get warmer outside here in North Texas which only means one thing… summer is approaching. We often get excited about spending our days being a little lazier and slower paced, however, that is not the best approach when it comes to our vehicles. The heat and laziness of summer brings on a whole new host of driving hazards:
Teen Drivers
First, school is out and curfews are not as strictly enforced, so more teen drivers are out on the roads. Teens just aren’t that experienced and are still testing the waters when it comes to driving. They also tend to rely more heavily on their phones. It is extremely important for parents to speak to and teach their kids about the dangers of using your phone while driving. Also, enforce the curfews! By limiting the amount of time teens spend on the road (especially at night) makes the roads safer for everyone.
People
The warmer weather continues to bring more and more people outside to soak up some sun. Look around and be aware of bikers, walkers, and children playing. Bikers need at least 3 feet of clearance. Check, and then double check, for walkers when you are turning and changing lanes. Be extra vigilant as you drive through neighborhoods as children may be outside playing.
Tire Blowouts
The risk of having a tire blowout increases in the summer due to an increase in potholes and temperatures. Winter tends to do a number on roads so potholes increase. Hot temperatures cause the air in your tires to expand which increases the risk of a tire blowout. Thus, driving over a pothole (and other hazards) could blow your tire. Check your tire pressure often and make sure you have a spare just in case. Having incorrect tire pressure also reduces your gas mileage, so be sure to check frequently.
Overheating Engine
The heat of the summer (especially North Texas summers) can directly affect your vehicle’s engine. If your engine does happen to overheat it could breakdown or even cause a fire. This poses a risk to you and other drivers on the road. Be sure to check your engine coolant levels frequently, make sure your air conditioning is working, and get your oil changed. If your engine does happen to overheat, pull over and immediately call for help.
