4 Ways to Protect Your Vehicle From Hail

The stormy season is approaching North Texas. If you have lived here for any number of time you understand that hail tends to be inevitable. The trick is being proactive and knowing ahead of time what your options are to protecting your vehicle from hail damage. 

Garage 

Of course your first line of defense is parking your vehicle in your own garage or covered driveway. However, we understand that not everyone has a garage, or has a garage with space for your vehicle. 

Covered Public Parking

When you are out and about be looking for covered public parking. This way when you see the storm coming, you know just where to take your vehicle. Think about shopping centers or mall parking garages, or if you don’t have time try to look for an overpass or maybe even a gas station canopy. 

Large Buildings

If you know which direction the storm is coming from, park your vehicle on the opposite side of the building. So if the storm is coming from the east, park on the west side. What you are doing is using the coverage from the building to hopefully keep your vehicle safe from the worst of the storm. Where Does Hail Come From?

Hail storms in North Texas are a matter of fact. You cannot always be sure when they will strike, but you can guarantee at some point they will. 

But how does hail form? 

Hail is formed when the winds going into a thunderstorm carry a raindrop into the cold air of the upper levels of the atmosphere. This causes the raindrop to freeze and a small ball of ice is created. 

Okay, how does hail grow in size? 

Hail grows when it encounters raindrops that are “super cooled.” Super cooled water means the temperature of the water is below freezing, but it has not frozen yet. When the super cooled water comes into contact with the hail they bond, thus making the size of the hail larger. 

So what determines how big the hail gets?

The stronger the winds that are going into the thunderstorm, the higher the hail will lift. This give it more time to connect with super cooled water and expand in size. As long as the wind keeps lifting it, it will keep expanding. When the hail finally gets to heavy for the wind, it will fall.
